In 2024, consumption of angles, shapes and sections of stainless steel or other alloy steel increased by 1.5% to 1.1M tons, rising for the third consecutive year after two years of decline. Overall, consumption saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, consumption attained the peak volume in 2024 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.
The value of the stainless steel angle market in China shrank rapidly to $2.3B in 2024, falling by -18.8% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). Over the period under review, consumption showed strong growth. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $2.9B in 2023, and then fell markedly in the following year.
In 2024, after four years of decline, there was growth in production of angles, shapes and sections of stainless steel or other alloy steel, when its volume increased by 4.5% to 1.2M tons. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2022 with an increase of 24%. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $2.6B in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2024, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In 2024, supplies from abroad of angles, shapes and sections of stainless steel or other alloy steel increased by 30% to 12K tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a five-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a deep reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 80% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of 44K tons. From 2015 to 2024, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, stainless steel angle imports skyrocketed to $38M in 2024. In general, imports, however, showed a perceptible downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 66%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $96M. From 2015 to 2024, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In 2024, the UK (6K tons) constituted the largest stainless steel angle supplier to China, accounting for a 49% share of total imports. Moreover, stainless steel angle imports from the UK exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Japan (2.8K tons), twofold. Taiwan (Chinese) (1.7K tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 14% share.
From 2013 to 2024, the average annual growth rate of volume from the UK amounted to +38.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Japan (-8.5% per year) and Taiwan (Chinese) (+4.3% per year).
In value terms, Japan ($15M) constituted the largest supplier of angles, shapes and sections of stainless steel or other alloy steel to China, comprising 39% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the UK ($6.5M), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by Taiwan (Chinese), with a 13% share.
From 2013 to 2024, the average annual growth rate of value from Japan amounted to -3.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the UK (+22.1% per year) and Taiwan (Chinese) (+1.6% per year).
In 2024, steel, alloy; angles, shapes and sections (12K tons) was the main type of angles, shapes and sections of stainless steel or other alloy steel supplied to China, accounting for a 95% share of total imports. Moreover, steel, alloy; angles, shapes and sections exceeded the figures recorded for the second-largest type, steel, stainless (677 tons), more than tenfold.
From 2013 to 2024, the average annual growth rate of the volume of steel, alloy; angles, shapes and sections imports totaled -5.9%.
In value terms, steel, alloy; angles, shapes and sections ($28M) constituted the largest type of angles, shapes and sections of stainless steel or other alloy steel supplied to China, comprising 74% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by steel, stainless ($10M), with a 26% share of total imports.
From 2013 to 2024, the average annual growth rate of the value of steel, alloy; angles, shapes and sections imports totaled -4.1%.
The average stainless steel angle import price stood at $3,110 per ton in 2024, waning by -4.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated a noticeable expansion from 2013 to 2024: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the last eleven-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2024 figures, stainless steel angle import price decreased by -20.9% against 2022 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2022 an increase of 64%. In 2024, shipments abroad of angles, shapes and sections of stainless steel or other alloy steel was finally on the rise to reach 122K tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a four-year declining trend. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a sharp decline. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at 4M tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2024, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, stainless steel angle exports dropped slightly to $143M in 2024. Overall, exports, however, showed a dramatic decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 5.7% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $2.1B. From 2015 to 2024, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Indonesia (38K tons), South Korea (23K tons) and Vietnam (18K tons) were the main destinations of stainless steel angle exports from China, together comprising 65% of total exports. Thailand, Romania, Singapore, Brazil, Russia, the Philippines, Myanmar, Malaysia, Hong Kong SAR and Saudi Arabia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 16%.
From 2013 to 2024, the biggest increases were recorded for Romania (with a CAGR of +39.2%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline.
In value terms, Indonesia ($35M), South Korea ($24M) and Vietnam ($14M) were the largest markets for stainless steel angle exported from China worldwide, with a combined 51% share of total exports. Thailand, Russia, Brazil, Romania, Singapore, the Philippines, Malaysia, Hong Kong SAR, Saudi Arabia and Myanmar lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 19%.
Romania, with a CAGR of +43.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
Steel, alloy; angles, shapes and sections (85K tons) was the largest type of angles, shapes and sections of stainless steel or other alloy steel exported from China, with a 70% share of total exports. Moreover, steel, alloy; angles, shapes and sections exceeded the volume of the second product type, steel, stainless (37K tons), twofold.
From 2013 to 2024, the average annual rate of growth in terms of the volume of steel, alloy; angles, shapes and sections exports stood at -28.5%.
In value terms, steel, stainless ($85M) and steel, alloy; angles, shapes and sections ($58M) were the most exported types of angles, shapes and sections of stainless steel or other alloy steel from China worldwide.
Steel, stainless, with a CAGR of +2.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main product categories over the period under review.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major types of exported product. In 2024, the product with the highest price was steel, stainless ($2,298 per ton), while the average price for exports of steel, alloy; angles, shapes and sections amounted to $686 per ton.
